'Sthapana diwas' (foundation day after reconstruction)
of the famous Somnath temple, situated near Veraval in Saurashtra region of
Gujarat.
The first of the 12 'jyotir lingas' temples of Lord Shankar – “Somnath temple”, was reopened after reconstruction on May 11, 1951.
On May 11, 1951 the temple reconstruction was completed and sacred ceremony of 'linga pratishtha' (idol installation) was performed by the first President of India Rajendra Prasad.
The Somnath temple, known for its huge wealth, was invaded on several occasions starting from 1024, when the temple was raided by Mahmud Ghazni. It was also attacked by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb in 1706.
