ભારત અમેરિકા પાસેથી બે અબજ ડોલરના ખર્ચે ૨૨ ડ્રોન ખરીદશે

અમેરિકાએ સમુદ્ર પર નજર રાખી શકે તેવા ૨૨ ડ્રોન બે અબજ ડોલરની કીમતે ભારતને વેચવાનો નિર્ણય લીધો છે. આ નિર્ણયથી અમેરિકામાં ૨૦૦૦ નોકરીઓનું સર્જન થશે અને ભારત અને અમેરિકાના સંબધો વધુ મજબૂત બનશે તેમ આ સોદામાં મહત્ત્વપૂર્ણ ભૂમિકા ભજવનાર એક અમેરિકન અધિકારીએ જણાવ્યું છે.

જનરલ એટોમિકના યુએસ એન્ડ ઇન્ટરનેશનલ સ્ટ્રેટિજિક ડેવલોપમેન્ટના ચીફ એક્ઝિકયૂટીવ વિવેક લેલે ગઇકાલે એટલાન્ટિક કાઉન્સીલને જણાવ્યું હતું કે આ સમજૂતીથી ભારત અને અમેરિકા વચ્ચેના સંરક્ષણ સંબધો વધુ મજબૂત બનશે. સમુદ્ર પર નજર રાખતા આ ડ્રોનથી ભારતીય નેવીની ક્ષમતા વધશે.

વિવેક લેલે ટ્વિટર પર જણાવ્યું હતું કે ડ્રોનના વેચાણથી બંને દેશો વચ્ચેના સંબધો વધુ મજબૂત થશે. જૂન મહિનામાં ડોનાલ્ડ ટ્રમ્પ અને વડાપ્રધાન મોદીની વ્હાઇટ હાઉસમાં મળેલી બેઠકમાં આ અંગે નિર્ણય લેવામાં આવ્યો હતો.

આ ડ્રોનનું નિર્માણ અમેરિકન કંપની જનરલ એટોમિક કરશે. કંપનીએ જણાવ્યું છે કે ચીન દક્ષિણ ચીન સમુદ્ર પર કબજો જમાવવાના પ્રયત્નો કરી રહ્યું છે ત્યારે ભારત પોતાના રક્ષણ માટે વધુ શક્તિળાળી બને તે જરૃરી છે.  ઉલ્લેખનીય છે કે તાજેતરમાં જ ભારતને ઇઝરાઇલ પાસેથી ૪૦ કરોડ ડોલરના ખર્ચે ૧૦ એડવાન્સ્ડ હેરોન ડ્રોન મળ્યા છે. વિવેક લેલે વધુમાં જણાવ્યું હતું કે આ સમજૂતીને કારણે વેચાણ સહિતની કુલ ૨૦૦૦ નોકરીઓનું નિર્માણ થશે.

આજથી પેરીસમાં વર્લ્ડ કુસ્તી ચેમ્પિયનશીપનો પ્રારંભ થવા જઈ રહ્યો છે, જેમાં ભારતનો મદાર રિયો ઓલિમ્પિકની બ્રોન્ઝ મેડાલીસ્ટ સાક્ષી મલિક તેમજ બજરંગ પુનિયા જેવા કુસ્તીબાજો પર વિશેષ રહેશે.

સાક્ષી મલિકે મે મહિનામાં યોજાયેલી એશિયન કુસ્તી ચેમ્પિયનશીપમાં સિલ્વર મેડલ જીત્યો હતો. જે પછી હવે તેની પાસેથી વર્લ્ડ ચેમ્પિયનશીપમાં ગોલ્ડ મેડલની આશા રાખવામાં આવી રહી છે. સાક્ષીએ રિયોમાં ૫૮ કિગ્રા વજન વર્ગમાં બ્રોન્ઝ જીત્યો હતો. જ્યારે તે હવે ૬૦ કિગ્રા વજન વર્ગની ઈવેન્ટમાં ભાગ લઈ રહી છે.

સાક્ષી ઉપરાંત વિનેશ ફોગટ પાસેથી ૪૮ કિગ્રા વજન વર્ગની ઈવેન્ટમાં મેડલની આશા છે. એશિયન ચેમ્પિયન બજરંગ પુનિયાને આ વખતે તેના બ્રોન્ઝ મેડલને ગોલ્ડમાં ફેરવવાની તક છે.

બજરંગે ૨૦૧૩ની બુડાપેસ્ટ વર્લ્ડ ચેમ્પિયનશીપમાં ૬૦ કિગ્રા વજન વર્ગની ફ્રિસ્ટાઈલ કુસ્તીમાં બ્રોન્ઝ જીત્યો હતો. આ વખતે તેન ૬૫ કિગ્રા વજન વર્ગની ઈવેન્ટમાં ભાગ લઈ રહ્યો છે. આ ઉપરાંત ૫૭ કિગ્રા વજન વર્ગમાં સંદિપ તોમર, ૭૦ કિગ્રા વજન વર્ગમાં અમિત ધાન્કર, ૭૪ કિગ્રા વજન વર્ગમાં પ્રવિણ રાણા અને ૯૭ કિગ્રા વજન વર્ગમાં સત્યવ્રત કાડિયન પર પણ નજર રહેશે.

પાક.ના 'મધર ટેરેસા'ને રાજકીય સન્માન સાથે અંતિમ વિદાય

પાકિસ્તાનના મધર ટેરેસા તરીકે જાણીતા અને  જર્મનીના મૂળ નિવાસી રૃથ કેથેરિન માર્થાને આજે મરણાંપરાંત સંપૂર્ણ કક્ષાનો રાજકીય સન્માન અપાયો હતો. આમ પાક.માં આ સન્માન મેળવનાર તેઓ પ્રથમ ખ્રિસ્તી મહિલા બન્યા હતા.

પાકિસનમાં કુષ્ટરોગ, ટીબી અને અન્ય પ્રકારના રોગોના નિવારણ માટે આખી જીંદગી ઝઝુમનાર માર્થા ૧૦ ઓગસ્ટના રોજ ૮૭ વર્ષની વયે ગુજરી ગયા હતા. ૧૯૨૯માં લિપઝિંગ તરીકે જન્મેલા માર્થા ભારત થઇ પાકિસ્તાનામાં ૧૯૬૦માં આવ્યા હતા અને અત્રેની કુષ્ટરોગની કોલોનીમાં સેવા માટે રોકાઇ ગયા હતા.

કરાચીમાં જ્યારે તેમણે કુષ્ટરોગીઓને ઉંદરનો ભોજન બનતા જોયા ત્યારે ખૂબ જ હતાશ થઇ ગયા હતા અને ત્યાર પછી અહીંયા જ રહી ગયા હતા. તેઓ આરોગ્ય કર્મચારી તરીકે પાક.માં જ રોકાઇ ગયા હતા અને મેરી એડિલેડ લેપ્રોસી સેન્ટરની સ્થાપના કરી હતી. પાક.ના વડા પ્રધાન શાહીદ ખાકાન અબબાસીએ તેમને અંજલી આપતાં કહ્યું હતું કે ' પાક.માંથી કુષ્ટરોગ નિવારણ માટે આજીવન સેવા આપવા બદલ પાક. તેમનો આભારી છે. પાકિસ્તાન તેમની આ નિસ્વાર્થ સેવા બદલ તેમનો ઋુણી રહેશે' પાકિસ્તાની સૈનિકો તેમના કોફિનને લઇને  કરાચીના સદર વિસ્તાકમાં સેન્ટ પેટ્રીક કેથેડરલ ચર્ચ પહોંચ્યા હતા. રાષ્ટ્રીય ધ્વજમાં લપેટાયેલા તેમના પાર્થિવ શરીરને ૧૯ બંદુકોની સલામી અપાઇ હતી. આ પ્રસંગે સેનાની ત્રણે પાંખના જવાનો હાજર હતા.

World Humanitarian Day is a day dedicated to recognize humanitarian personnel and those who have lost their lives working for humanitarian causes. 

India and the US to establish a new two-by-two ministerial dialogue

The decision by India and the US to establish a new two-by-two ministerial dialogue has been welcomed by top American experts who believe that it would enhance strategic coordination between the two nations. US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed to enhance peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region by establishing a new two-by-two ministerial dialogue, which would elevate their strategic consultations, according to the White House.

This is a very welcome development. Having a joint State-Defence conversation with India makes much more sense than having a State-Commerce dialogue because the convergence between the two countries is much greater on strategic issues in comparison to commercial issues.

The new format would include External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Defence Minister Arun Jaitley and their American counterparts Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Defence Secretary James Mattis. 

This will be helpful to coordinate more closely on Afghanistan, the Indian Ocean, developments in the Asia Pacific, and hopefully also on the Middle East (West Asia for India)

Two New Earthworm Species Found In Kerala

Researchers at Mahatma Gandhi University in Kerala and Shoolini University in Himachal Pradesh named the new earthworm species Drawida polydiverticulata and Drawida thomasi.

Scientists have discovered two new primitive species of earthworm in the Western Ghats mountain ranges in Kerala.

For Drawida polydiverticulata : its multiple lobes, also called diverticulums - an organ located in the front of its body - are unique amongst the members of the genus. This species was found to be widespread in the protected shola grasslands of the Munnar region, including Eravikulam National Park, Pampadun Shola National Park and Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, researchers said.

Drawida thomasi :, was collected at the Kozhippara Waterfalls near Kakkadampoyil, at the border between Malappuram and Kozhikode

The present discovery of two new species and five new local records further contributes to the vast species richness of the genus in the state.

At present, there are about 200 species known in the genus Drawida. Their habitats are spread across India throughout the Indo-China region to southeastern Asia and up to the north in Japan.

Defence Ministry approves delegation of powers to BRO

The Ministry of Defence has decided to delegate administrative and financial powers to the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) right upto the level of Chief Engineer and Task Force Commander, so as to avoid delays on account of references between the Chief Engineer and HQ DGBR and also between HQ DGBR and the Ministry. 

For adopting the DPR mode of execution, there is a need to outsource consultancy services. According to the earlier delegation of powers, a Chief Engineer had powers only upto Rs. 10 lakh, ADGBR upto Rs. 50 lakh and DGBR upto Rs. 2 crore. The Ministry of Defence has now enhanced the powers of Chief Engineer to accord administrative approval for outsourcing of consultancy services upto Rs. 2 crore and ADGBR upto Rs. 5 crore and full powers beyond Rs. 5 crore to DGBR. 

The BRO is engaged in road construction activities in the most difficult areas and the usage norms and fixation of life of construction equipment varies from terrain to terrain.

Earlier, all cases of revision of norms of equipment and fixation of life had to be referred to the Ministry of Defence. In a departure from the earlier policy, full powers in this regard have been delegated to DGBR. 

It is expected that with delegation of powers by the Ministry of Defence to the BRO, the pace of road construction in border areas would improve and the BRO would be able to complete ongoing/new projects in compressed timelines.
